Alternate Game Rules

For games where a few rule changes makes all the difference!

King of Tokyo

Game Summary:

Monsters (players) try to be the first to reach 20 victory points. Each turn the dice are rolled (dice can be 1, 2, 3, energy, heal, or attack). Then the player may re-roll any of their dice up to 2 additional times. Three of a kind results in victory points (e.g. 3 dice rolled as a 2 results in 2 victory points). Rolling attack when no monsters occupy Tokyo moves you into Tokyo. Otherwise rolling attack hits monsters where you are not (i.e. if you are in Tokyo monsters outside Tokyo are hit and vice versa). Energy gives you an energy cube you can use to spend on special ability cards. And obviously heal heals one life point.

Goal of Changes:

When playing with more aggressive players, the game is about the "last man standing" rather than winning by victory points. The side effect is people tend to get upset when they are knocked out of the game and can no longer participate.

Rule Changes:

All rules remain the same except those explicitly addressed below.

Original Alternate
When a monster reaches zero life points they die and are out of the game. When a monster reaches zero life points they begin losing victory points. If they have no life points or victory points attacks have no effect. They have already hit rock bottom, no other penalties need be inflicted.
If a monster is in Tokyo when their life points reach zero, they are ejected from Tokyo and the attacker takes their place.

With 5 or 6 players, if both monsters drop to zero life points, they are both ejected and the attacker takes Tokyo city.
This rule is the same, but reiterated for clarification.

Additionally no monster with zero life points can enter Tokyo. If a monster with no life points attacks and brings the life points of the monster in Tokyo to zero, Tokyo is left vacant.
Poison Spit card: When hitting a monster, place a poison token on their card. At the end of their turn, they lose one life point for each poison token. A poison token can be removed by using a heal roll. Other attacks decrease victory points after a monster reaches zero life points, but poison tokens do not. Poison tokens do still get placed and must be removed before the player can heal.
- Remove these cards from the deck before play:
- It has a child
- Eater of the dead
